New article on job performance measurement

Job performance includes many aspects like completing tasks, helping others, or avoiding harmful behaviors. When measuring job performance, we can ask supervisors to rate an employee or employees to rate themselves. But how is the agreement between these two perspectives? Our study explored how much variance overlapped between both and how each perspective (or their overlap) contribute to understanding job performance and validating hiring tools. We found that supervisors and employees offer unique insights that only partly overlap. On average, the overlap was only 13%, and even lower for helping behaviors. Notably, personality traits like conscientiousness were more linked to how employees rated themselves, while mental ability was more connected to supervisor ratings. These results highlight the value of combining both viewpoints for a more complete and accurate assessment of job performance.
