Symposium 2025

Round-Table Symposium

“What do physiological measures reveal about monitoring judgments and self-regulation decisions?”

Date: December 16, 2025
Location: Room BIN 1.A.12, Binzmühlestrasse 14, Zürich (Oerlikon)
Time: 13:45 - 16:00

The aim of this symposium is to explore if, and how, physiological measures can be combined with behavioural measures to improve our understanding of the judgments (including error / conflict detection) and decisions that people make when working on learning tasks.

Program:
13.45 to 14.00

Mariëtte van Loon, University of Zurich. Introduction to the aims of the symposium and to research paradigms to assess metacognitive processes.

14.00 to 14.15
Florence Lucas and Tamara van Gog, Utrecht University. Physiological measures of challenge and threat states in educational research.

14.15 to 14.30
Solange Denervaud, EPFL Lausanne. Assessing error monitoring with ERP.

14.30 to 14.45
Sarah Meissner, ETH Zürich. Assessing arousal and self regulation with pupil size measures.

14.45 to 15.00
Break

15.00 to 16.00
Round table discussion with the experts and the audience. Guiding questions include:
• How can these measures help investigate self monitoring, self regulation and the cues that guide judgments and decisions.
• What are the strengths and limitations of these measures.
• How precisely do they capture the underlying constructs.
• How do they relate to other physiological, behavioural and self report measures.
• Are they suitable for different age groups.
• What are the costs and practical requirements of these instruments.
• How refined is the temporal resolution.
• What expertise is needed to collect and interpret these measures.
• Other questions raised by the audience.

After 16:00 all attendants are warmly invited for coffee, tea or Glühwein at the Stars and Stripe Bar at Train Station Oerlikon.
